I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.  However, I believe I have found a cure for hiccups that takes only 30 seconds and requires no extra props.  I initially discovered this around 1994, and Ive been using it successfully ever since.  In late 2004 I decided to post it on the Internet.  I do not know how or why this works, and if by chance you might be a doctor or have other knowledge of why this works, please let me know.

I have seen many cures for hiccups.... drinking a glass of water, having someone scare you (get real), breathing into a paper bag, etc.  If anything, many of these cures seem like cures because eventually the hiccups go away.  To me, that isnt a cure.... it is something to do until the hiccups go away!  And some of these cures sound ridiculous, if not impossible to do (ever try standing on your head while drinking a glass of water?!?).  The cure I use is easy to do and the results are immediate.  All it takes is 30 seconds to try it, and you dont need any props, such as paper bags, water, etc.  You can do it anytime, anywhere.  You have nothing to lose but your hiccups!  And I even offer a click-back guarantee.  If my cure doesnt work for you, click your browsers Back button and go back to your search page.  :)

Before I actually get to the cure, I should say that although I see no harm in doing this, persons with abnormally low lung capacity, lung/breathing problems, or other medical conditions might want to consult a doctor first.  Not that I expect anything bad to happen, but dont blame me if it does!  :)  I have also received a couple emails from worried people with extremely bad cases of hiccups.  While I still see no harm in trying my cure, if you get hiccups very violently or very often, you really should see a doctor.  Ive never heard of anyone dying from hiccups, so I wouldnt get too worked up about it, but if you get hiccups so bad that you cant breathe or they are seriously disrupting your life, you should see a doctor.  While they probably wont have much else to offer for a cure, they may be able to help find the cause.  There are many different causes (some unknown), but some I have heard of are certain medications, certain types of foods, stress, alcohol, and drinking or eating too fast.

Having gotten the disclaimer out of the way, here we go:
If done correctly, the whole process should take around 30 seconds, and your hiccups will be gone.  This has never failed me, and from the testimonials below, it seems to work for many people.  I believe that for those that it does not work for, they are not repeating steps 3 and 4 as many times as they can.  When you think you cannot possibly swallow again, try to do it anyway; same goes for inhaling.  It also seems that not letting any air out during the process is important.  If you hiccup while trying to do this, try not to exhale after the hiccup (the hiccup will force more air IN, working with you).  If you do let air out, it is best to start over from step 1.  It has also been reported by one visitor of this site that it seemed to work better standing (particularly as opposed to laying down), but I have done it successfully both standing and sitting down.  Your experience may vary.

I have been doing this many years, and it always works for me.  This is similar to another cure I have heard, which is to hold your breath.  That alone has never worked for me.  Somehow I got the idea to add swallowing to it, and the result was success.  An interesting side-effect is that (for me at least) for around 15 or 20 seconds after doing this, you feel like you want to hiccup, but it never happens.  I am not sure if this is because you expect to hiccup again or what, but the nice thing is the hiccups do not return.

If you have tried this and it does not work, I suggest repeating steps 3 and 4 at least one more time than you were able to originally.  And of course, while it does seem to work for almost everyone I have told, it is possible that it will not work for everybody.  Although I personally feel that the problem is not the method, but rather the execution of it; of course I am a bit biased.  :)

For overall best results, please try to do the steps as quickly as you can and try very hard not to let any air out.  If you are not literally struggling to swallow at the end then you are probably not quite doing it right.

Step 1: Start by inhaling through your mouth until your lungs feel full (when it feels like you cannot inhale any more.... your lungs will basically stop taking in air).

Step 2: Swallow.  You are not really swallowing anything but it seems that without this act, it doesnt work.  Do not let any air out.

Step 3: Now inhale some more until your lungs feel full again.  You may not be able to inhale a lot, but do get some more air in.  It will start to get difficult to do this as you go, but keep trying.  You obviously cant suck in as much air as you did initially, but just a little will do (think of it as taking a sip of air but directly into your lungs).

Step 4: Swallow again.  This too will start to get difficult as you go.  Do not let any air out.

Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 (inhale and swallow) until you cannot swallow again.  While it seems you can almost always suck in just a little more air, it is actually the swallowing that gets to be impossible.  When you feel like you cannot swallow again, swallow again anyway.  It will be hard to do, your face will probably turn red, and you may make squeaking sounds.  But you CAN swallow one last time.  By this time, your lungs should also be quite full and it should be difficult to get much more air in as well.  While you should try not to let any air out, if you have really repeated steps 3 and 4 as many times as you can, you probably will end up letting a little air out before you can take that last swallow.  If you find that air keeps escaping out of your nose even early in the process, try squeezing it shut with your fingers.

Step 6: Exhale.

Etape 2: Avaler votre salive. Vous ne pouvez pas vraiment avaler votre salive mais il semble que sans cette tape, lastuce ne fonctionne pas. Ne laisse pas dair schapper!

Etape 3: Maintenant inspirer un peu plus dair jusqu ce que vos poumons semblent pleins. Vous ne devriez pas tre capable dinspirer beaucoup plus mais essayez simplement dinspirer un peu plus dair quand mme. Vous ne pouvez videmment pas inspirer autant dair que la premire fois mais un petit peu devrait suffire.

Etape 4: Avalez nouveau votre salive. Ca devrait commencer tre plus difficile. Ne laisser toujours pas dair schapper!

Etape 5: Rpter les tapes 3 et 4 (inspirez un peu plus et avalez votre salive) jusqu ce que vous ne pouviez plus avaler votre salive. Mme si vous arriverez presque toujours inspirer un peu plus dair, le fait davaler votre salive finira par devenir impossible. Quand vous arrivez au point o vous avez limpression de ne plus pouvoir avaler, forcez-vous avaler votre salive une dernire fois. Ce sera difficile, votre visage deviendra certainement rouge et il est possible que vous en arriviez mettre des gloussements. Mais vous POUVEZ avaler votre salive une dernire fois. A ce stage, vos poumons devraient tre bien plein dair et a devrait tre difficile dinspirer plus dair. Mme si vous devez essayer de ne pas laisser dair schapper, si vous avez rpt les tapes 3 et 4 autant de fois que possible, vous aurez certainement besoin de laisser chapper un peu dair avant de pouvoir avaler votre salive une dernire fois. En revanche, si vous vous apercevez que lair schappe de votre nez ds les premires tapes, pincez-vous le nez pendant toutes les tapes.

Una cura per il singhiozzo, in 30 secondi.

Per un risultato ottimale, cerca di compiere le fasi nel minor tempo possibile e fai attenzione a trattenere il respiro.

1) Inizia inalando attraverso la bocca fino a riempire i polmoni (quando senti di non poter inalare pi i tuoi polmoni smetteranno di riempirsi d'aria).

2) Deglutisci. Non che tu stia veramente deglutendo qualcosa, ma il metodo senza questa azione non sembra funzionare. Continua a trattenere il respiro.

2. Slik. Je slikt niet echt iets door, maar het lijkt dat zonder deze stap de kuur niet werkt. Laat geen lucht ontsnappen.

3. Adem iets meer in tot uw longen weer helemaal vol voelen. Je zult waarschijnlijk niet veel kunnen inademen, maar doe zoveel mogelijk. Het zal moeilijk worden maar blijf proberen. Natuurlijk kan je niet zoveel inademen als de eerste keer, maar zelfs een beetje maakt het verschil. ( Zie het als een slokje lucht rechtstreeks in je longen)

4. Slik opnieuw. Dit wordt ook moeilijker. Laat geen lucht ontsnappen.

5. Herhaal stappen 3 en 4 ( inademen en slikken) tot je niet meer kunt slikken. Het lijkt alsof je altijd nog een beetje lucht kunt inademen, maar het is het slikken dat echt moeilijker wordt. Wanneer het voelt dat je echt niet meer kunt slikken, slik toch nog een keer. Het zal moeilijk zijn om te doen, je gezicht zal waarschijnlijk rood worden, en je maakt misschien vreemde geluidjes, maar je KAN nog een laatste maal slikken. Nu zullen uw longen ook helemaal vol zijn, en het zal heel moeilijk worden om er nog wat lucht in te krijgen. Probeer geen lucht te laten ontsnappen. Als je stap 3 en 4 zoveel mogelijk herhaald hebt, zal je waarschijnlijk wel een beetje lucht hebben laten ontsnappen, zodat je toch nog een laatste maal kan slikken. The Guinness World Record for the longest continuous bout of hiccups is held by Charles Osborne from Anthon, Iowa. The hiccups started in 1922 at a rate of 40 times per minute, slowing to 20 times per minute, and eventually stopping in 1990.  68 years of hiccups!
